The Grey

MISE EN SCENE
Setting and Props
The trailer is set in harsh winter conditions, possibly in the location of Alaska or the Arctic I can gather from the short trailer. Props involved in the trailer include: gun, plane (the crashed plane), walking equipment and the wolves.
Costume, Hair and Make up
The actors are wearing large, thick winter clothing such as big coats, hats and winter boots. The make up has been done to give the impression of frost bite around actors beards, cuts and bruising have been introduced as well from the plane crash. Also the large amount of blood on the corpses that litter the crash site make the viewer believe that realistically this is what it would be like in real life.
Facial expressions and Body language
There is quite a mix of emotions conveyed throughout the trailer. From the shock realisation that the plane is going down, to the anger and determination to defeat the wolves that are attacking. It all adds up to show us that the actors experience quite an ordeal throughout the film.
Lighting and colour
The trailer only really uses the two extremes of lighting and colour in the trailer. The bright white snow enhances the day time shots making it extremely light in some parts. However the lighting has been cleverly done in the night time encounters with the wolves, to make it so dark that you can make out just the eyes of the wolves in some cases, this is extremely effective.
Positioning  of the characters within the frame
Finally, the characters tend to be positioned quite close in to the camera in most shots, A lot of close ups have been used, in order to maximise the show of emotion and facial expression by the actors. They tend to be centre of shot throughout the whole trailer.

Juno opening sequence

For this project we had to remake the opening scene of Juno. Before we started to film each clip we made a storyboard, the story board had 10 different clips that we drew out to help us when we made the film. The good things about our remake of the scene would be that we made sure that all of our shots were the same as what we saw on the orginal. We made sure we had the props and environment that the orignal scene has. This way it looks more like the orginal scence of juno. When we was filming we made sure that we put the camera is the right shot and the angle was the way it should be. Overall we found it fun to film but was very challenging having to get the right shots at the right amount of time set for each shot. Next time the things that we should improve could be the environment we filmed each set in this would mean that it would be more alike to the orginal scene and it would look better. We could improve the stediness of the camera and the way the camera shots were taken. After we had finished filming we downloaded the shots that we fimed onto premier to help edit and move around each shot. When we used this software we changed the editing of the shots, we made them a different colour, and transitions, also added the music of the orignal juno opening scene to make it more alike.

Representation Theory

The male gaze
The cinema apparatus of Hollywood cinema puts the audience in the mans subject position with the woman on the screen seen as an object of desire.

The bechdal test
Films have to have at least two named woman in it, who have a conversation with each other, about something beside a man.

Mythology
When places are represented in the media as a fairytale place, that is often much better on the screen than it is in real life.

Frame Angle and Movement screenshots (Dark Knight rises)

This is a MEDIUM CLOSE UP which gives you  a wider view of all three hostages in the back of the car, yet also allows you to see good detail.
This shot is a close up of one of Bane's men after he is told that he is to die. This close up is very effective as you can clearly see the emotion conveyed on the actors face.

This shot is an extreme long shot, which puts the size of the plane, valley and cliff into perspective very well.

This shot is an extreme close up of when bane is revealed to the army personnel. The shot focusses clearly on Banes face and serious emotion. They have edited the shot well by blurring the background yet still allowing you to make out the soldiers behind him, so your are drawn to concentrating on the main action of the scene.

The final shot is an extreme long shot from a low angle, showing the viewer how far the drop is to the ground for the plane. It is a very effective shot as it also contains the actors in the foreground as well as the plane falling to the ground.

Photo Genre Task

In this task we had to take photographs, in which we had to try and convey a selected genre. The genres that were assigned were Comedy, Action, Rom-com and fantasy, below are the pictures that we took.
Fantasy
In this picture we tried to convey fantasy by using the tree. The tree is a symbol of a forest which is where a lot of the stereotypical fantasy stories take place. In the photo you can see the girl standing behind the tree this entices the viewer into thinking what lies behind the tree? Is there some kind of mystical land or world lying behind?  You can also see the pair of feet hanging from the branch; this also is quite mysterious and intriguing to someone viewing the photo.

Action
This is the action shot we took. It pictures the boy in the starting position for a sprint race, which gives the impression that some form of explosive action is about to take place. The picture gives off quite a serious vibe by the look on the actors face conveying serious concentration and the way he is staring dead ahead completely in the zone.

Comedy

The next photo is comedy themed. The comedy in this photo is shown by the boy being put in the bin by the girl, with the girl standing over him about to shut the lid. This holds quite slapstick comical value and is amusing due to the fact that the boy is much larger than the girl yet he has been bullied into the bin.

Rom-Com
We have conveyed the genre of romantic comedy in a very simple yet effective way, with a hug. The show of affection between the two characters gives clear romantic element to the photo.

Narative Task

This is the film cover from the 2013 film blockbuster Olympus has fallen.
Immediately we get the impression that the white house is involved in some form of attack due to the denotation of the burning building. We can also gather the genre is action/ military by looking at the explosions taking place on the cover.
The most interesting thing about this cover, for me, is the subtle American flag fluttering in front of the main picture. Firstly the two colours of the American flag entice me the most. The harshness of the red in the stripes connotate danger and hazards that are to come in the film. However the coolness of the blue shows us that some good will come in the end. Also the way the flag has been slashed and burned boosts my earlier theory that America comes under some form of attack.
As I said earlier we can see the White house in the background, showing us that the film is set in Washington DC.
Finally, the piece of text above the house in the picture 'When our flag falls, our nation will rise' entices the viewer. The bold block capital font gives the text a powerful tone yet the light blue colour against the sky in the background gives a softness to it. This is why I believe that the film will be a struggle between binary opposites (good and evil) throughout.

Opening scene analysis

This is the opening sequence from the James Bond film Quantum of Solace, directed by Marc Foster.

The destination for this opening sequence is exotic Sienna, Italy. The sequence begins with a car chase along the cliff top, coastal road. Gradually as the chase progresses the characters enter a working quarry and finally as the sequence ends bond returns to rural rustic Sienna where it concludes before cutting to the opening credits and theme song.
Straight away as a viewer the theme is set that this film is going to be an action thriller, due to the car chase and immediate exchanges of gun fire. We can also gather that this is not a film running on a tight budget, from the amount of damage done to expensive equipment such as the cars.
Obviously as the opening is a car chase, cars are involved. To be precise we encounter James Bonds slick, black Aston Martin which gives bond an aura of wealth and importance as this item is in his possession. We also encounter many other vehicles and machinery, such as diggers and equipment in the quarry as well as civilian cars on the road. There also many weapons used throughout this scene such as machine guns and pistols.

We have five sets of characters in the opening scene of this movie. Firstly we have James Bond (played by Daniel Craig), we then come across the so called 'bad guys' who are pursuing in cars whilst also shooting at him. We also are introduced to the local Police who discover the car chase and pursue but end up flying of the edge of the cliff! There are civilians who are making up the scene by driving on the road and are not involved with the actual plot of the story but happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Finally we are left with the introduction, at the very end of the scene, to bonds hostage, the man tied up in the boot of his car, giving us reason for why the men were pursuing him.
Camera angles and Sound were vital in presenting this sequence in the right way. Wide shots of the whole road and area combined with close ups of the actors faces allowed emotion to be conveyed, as well as allowing the audience to keep up with the plot of the story. The enhanced sound of the cars and gun shots also helped to enhance the action theme and really set the tone of the story that is to lay ahead.
